Aikido

"Way of Harmony"

Aikido is a Japanese martial art developed by Morihei Ueshiba. On a purely physical level, it is an art involving throws and joint locks derived from Jiu-jitsu as well as throws and other techniques derived from kenjutsu. Aikido focuses not on punching or kicking opponents, but rather on using one's own energy to gain control of opponents or to redirect them away from one's self. Aikido places great emphasis on motion and the dynamics of movement.

Aikido is an excellent physical exercise and effective self-defense. Moreover, it teaches a philosophy that integrates physical, cultural, and spiritual values that can have a profound effect on one's everyday life.

Aikido techiques emphasize redirecting and neutralizing the force of an opponent's attack, rather than inflicting harm. By moving in harmony with an opponent's movement, one is able to unbalance him and apply various forms of controls and throws in order to subdue him.
